The metropolitan city of Brisbane is the capital of the state of Queensland. Situated along the easternmost borders of Australia, this metropolis is nestled at the south-eastern edge of the state. The city was named after Brisbane River (which flows through the city), which itself was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, a Major-General in the British Army and Colonial Governor of New South Wales between 1821 and 1825. The Central Business District stands on the site of the original European settlement.

Established in 1824, Brisbane was proclaimed the state capital when Queensland was formally declared a separate colony from New South Wales in 1859. With a 5,904.8-kilometer land area, the metropolis covers several Local Government Areas, State Districts, and Federal Divisions. It is part of the Region of South East Queensland, as well as the County of Stanley.

In 2008, the Loughborough University classified Brisbane as a Beta-World City in the World Cities Study Group inventory. The following year, The Economist, a British weekly news magazine, ranked it the 16th most liveable city in the world. Today, its estimated population of over two million residents makes it the most populous city in Queensland and third most populous in Australia.

The tourism industry plays an important part in Brisbane's economy, thanks to its commercial, cultural, historical, and natural heritage. As such, the metropolis has much to offer its local and visiting tourists:

Those who wish to learn about Brisbane's culture and history can visit some of its significant locales, such as the Commissariat Stores, Mercy Heritage Centre, Old Government House, Parliament House, and Queensland Police Museum. For a more complete cultural experience of the city, people can participate in some of its annual events like the Paniyiri Festival (May), Brisbane Medieval Fayre and Tournament (June), Brisbane International Film Festival (July/August), Bridge-to-Brisbane Fun Run (August), Royal Queensland Show (August), Riverfestival (September), and Valley Fiesta.

For a more visual appreciation of Brisbane, one can visit some of its picturesque locations, like the Adopt a Koala Theme Park, Flinders Reef, Kangaroo Point, and Story Bridge. Alternatively, people can sample the tours available in the city, such as Australian Whale Watching and Charters, Brisbane Cruises, Brisbane Lights Tours, City Sights Hop On Hop Off Tour, CruiseM, Double Shot Motorcycle Tours, Ghost Tours, Golden Gondola, Out the Back Australia Tours, Personally Yours Tours, and Riverlife Adventure Centre.
